Tower Bridge Maintenance

Mini documentary series for the City of London capturing essential maintenance work on the iconic Tower Bridge.

A mini documentary series commissioned by the City of London Corporation, chronicling the essential maintenance work that keeps Tower Bridge, one of the world's most iconic landmarks, standing strong. The brief was to document a side of the bridge the public never sees: the specialist abseiling teams who scale its towering structure to carry out critical preservation work on the Victorian masterpiece. Filming a working landmark brought real production constraints. Access windows were dictated by the maintenance schedule, the weather, and the bridge's daily operation, so each shoot day was planned around early starts, from dawn preparations through to the intricate technical work at height above the River Thames. Our crew embedded with the abseiling teams, capturing rigging checks, descents, and close-up preservation work while staying clear of live working areas. Interview filming with the people behind the work anchors the series, pairing first-person accounts with observational footage so the story is told in the team's own words. The camera package was chosen for mobility: lightweight documentary rigs for handheld and stabilised work on the walkways, long-lens coverage from ground level and the riverbank, and aerial footage that frames the full scale of the structure above the Thames. The contrast between sweeping aerials and intimate, hands-on detail became the visual signature of the series. In post-production each film was cut to balance technical explanation with human storytelling, graded to hold detail in both the bridge's ironwork and the open sky behind it, and mixed so the location sound of wind, river traffic, and rigging keeps the viewer up on the structure with the team. The finished series provides a rare behind-the-scenes look at heritage conservation in action, honouring the dedication, skill, and bravery of the unsung heroes who maintain the bridge, and, as the Corporation's heritage team noted, it has become an invaluable asset for their public engagement work.

The production deployed a three-camera approach: a Sony FX6 on a DJI RS4 gimbal for stabilised walkway tracking shots alongside the abseiling teams, a Sony FX3 with a 70-200mm f/2.8 for long-lens coverage from ground level and the riverbank capturing the scale of the structure, and a DJI Mavic 3 Cine for 5.1K aerial footage framing Tower Bridge against the City of London skyline (CAA GVC-licensed operation within controlled airspace — operational authorisation obtained from the City of London Film Office and London City Airport air traffic control). Audio was captured via wireless lavaliers on the maintenance team leads for interview sequences, a Sennheiser MKH 416 shotgun for location atmosphere, and an ambient stereo pair to capture the River Thames soundscape. The shoot spanned four half-days across a six-week period to align with the maintenance schedule and weather windows. Post-production in DaVinci Resolve Studio included a documentary-grade colour grade balancing the bridge's ironwork against open sky, dialogue cleanup for windy walkway conditions, and a custom music score licensed for perpetual use. The series was delivered as three 4-6 minute episodes plus a 90-second compilation reel for the Corporation's social channels.
