Dynamic event coverage of a vibrant tattoo convention and Trainer Con, showcasing art, culture, and community.
Ink & Kicks Events commissioned Airframe Media to produce event coverage of their combined Tattoo Convention and Trainer Con — a dual-community event that brought together tattoo artistry and sneaker culture under one roof. The convention floor was a dense, fast-moving environment: tattoo artists working live on clients, sneaker authentication battles drawing crowds, custom footwear displays, and vendor stalls spanning both subcultures. The production brief was to capture the event's creative energy across both communities while producing content that could serve as promotional material for future events and a documentary record of this cultural crossover. Our production approach prioritised mobility and discretion. A two-person camera team worked the floor with gimbal-stabilised cameras, allowing smooth tracking through crowded aisles and around booth setups without interrupting the flow of the event. Cinematography alternated between observational documentary-style capture — lingering on the detail of a tattoo needle at work, the texture of rare sneaker materials, the concentration on an artist's face — and interview vignettes with artists, collectors, and attendees that provided the human narrative layer. Close-up work was particularly important: macro shots of tattoo linework and ink blending, and detail passes over collectible sneakers that showcased craftsmanship and condition. Audio capture combined a shotgun mic for ambient atmosphere with wireless lavalier for on-the-fly interviews in noisy convention conditions. Post-production shaped the footage into two primary deliverables: a high-energy 90-second event reel cut to a music track, emphasising pace, colour, and crowd energy for social media promotion; and a longer documentary-style cut that interwove artist profiles, collector stories, and the broader cultural context of both communities intersecting. The colour grade leaned into the venue's vivid lighting while keeping skin tones accurate for tattoo work. The resulting content was used across the organiser's social channels to drive ticket sales for subsequent events, with the documentary cut serving as a permanent record of the convention's unique cultural blend.
The energy at our convention is unlike anything else, and Airframe Media captured it perfectly. They understood both the tattoo and sneaker communities, creating content that resonated with our diverse audience and helped grow our event year over year.
